Germany: Oktoberfest 2008
"It's tapped!" That's what they shouted on September 20th, 2008 in the Theresienwiese -- "Queen Therese's Meadow" -- when the ceremonial first barrel of beer was tapped by the Mayor of the City of Munich, officially opening the 175th Oktoberfest. (As Oktoberfest is now over, our live image shows the ongoing cleanup in the Loewenbraeu tent.)
Over the course of the festival, more than six million visitors from all over the world came to the "Wies'n" to visit the fourteen massive tents housing the Big Six breweries and other food and entertainment facilities. There they drank some six million liters of beer, and afterwards went out to ride the thrill rides, eat roast oxen (eighty of them!), sausages (300,000 of them), roast chicken (600,000 of them), and charcoal-grilled mackerel (no stats on the mackerel, sorry: let's just say "lots"), along with soft pretzels and decorated gingerbread, while generally having a great time.
You may not have been able to get to the tents yourself, but it's still easy for you to visit our extensive German recipe collections. Stop in and make a little Oktoberfest for yourself right at home!
